How to Make the Most of Your Living Space

July 25, 2019
Whether you consider your townhome or apartment a transitional residence or home sweet home for decades ahead, your top priority should be making it a place that reflects your personality and style. Life is too short to just “make do,” when you can create a gorgeous refuge you’ll love to return to every day—without much more money or effort.

Let There Be Light

Lots of light helps even small spaces feel bright and spacious. Keep window coverings sheer, hang charming light fixtures from the ceilings and walls (it’s best not to clutter the floor with too many standing lamps and furniture), and maximize the light you have with mirrors that can reflect and multiply the warmth. Choosing light, neutral colors for your decor will also help enhance the open and airy feel.

Decorate on Repeat

When it comes to home decorating, less is almost always more. Repeating just a few key colors, patterns, and even textures throughout your living space gives it a sense of peace and cohesion that helps the eye wander toward simplicity, not chaos. Adding greenery brings beauty and texture to any decor—and to save space, hang your plants or mount them on a wall.

Make Your Porch and Patio a Breath of Fresh Air

Renting a space doesn’t mean you can’t make it yours. One of the easiest places to put your stamp of personal style is the porch, where you can celebrate different seasons and holidays throughout the year with wreaths, lighting, and planters. Sturdy pots can show off bright annuals in the spring and summer, a cornucopia of decorative gourds in the fall, and evergreen foliage and ornaments in the winter. Lanterns or tiny strung lights can make your front door inviting any time of year. Patios can be made to feel like an extension of common outside areas by repeating landscape perennials and annuals in planters and including a few pieces of light, outdoorsy furniture. Or make your patio more private and cozy by enclosing it with a screen and your own personal jungle of potted plants.

Get a Handle on Clutter

The first rule, of course, is to get rid of what you don’t need, even if you have to get ruthless about it (Marie Kondo, anyone?). Once you clear out unnecessary items, be creative with your storage by making the most of the space under your bed (with either built-in drawers or plastic storage containers), and opt for pieces with plenty of built-in storage, such as nightstands with drawers, chests that serve as coffee tables, and ottomans with storage space inside.
